Suicide prevention

Using Virtual Reality for an immersive learning experience

It’s not easy to replicate situations in which you will be confronted by a person who has suicidal feelings. Using virtual reality, different scenario’s can, however, be replicated to immersively copy actual possible situations. Combine this with options on how you would reply in cetrain situations and you have a very usable educational tool.

Health Innovation

In collaboration with the “Health Innovation” expertise center, XPLab has developed a mobile VR application for students and young graduate healthcare providers to experience suicide prevention scenarios for the first time. Again, it is important not only to focus on the learning material but also on the experience itself. Particularly in the case of suicide prevention, it is important to fully immerse oneself in the situation using complete immersion. Unlike the ECLIPS project described above, it was possible to work with actors and record everything in 360° video for this project. This makes the “game” even more realistic, which is crucial for this topic. Unity was used for the development of this application and displaying the 360° video, without any specific framework, along with STEAM VR, enabling the application to be easily used on different platforms (desktop, mobile, and VR headsets).

Immersiveness with Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) technology has emerged as a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize the way we learn and engage with educational content. By creating immersive and interactive experiences, VR opens up new possibilities for education, providing students with unprecedented opportunities to explore, discover, and understand complex concepts.

Virtual Reality offers students the ability to step into virtual environments that replicate real-world scenarios or simulate abstract concepts. Through immersive experiences, learners can actively engage with the subject matter, applying theoretical knowledge in practical settings. For instance, biology students can explore the human body from the inside, history students can visit ancient civilizations, and physics students can conduct virtual experiments. This experiential learning approach enhances understanding, retention, and critical thinking skills.
